MAMöro is a Lisbon based artist who has a distinct sound, mixing between the different elements of afro and tech driven bass. We caught up with him recently to find out more about his signature sound, how his 2024 has been, and what plans he has for 2025.
WWD: Hey MAMöro! What have been the highs and lows of 2024 for you?
The highs for 2024 were for sure my entrance on the Ibiza scene! I had a few gigs there this summer including a very special one at Cova Santa and I also had a great time playing in Dubai for the first time. Production wise I had a really good release with my track Whispers. For the lows I think I would only pick not reaching some goals I had set for myself. Other than that it was a good year and I can only hope that 2025 will get even better.
WWD: What is the scene in Lisbon like right now? How much does it inspire you, and what would you say are some of the highlight venues to visit?
Regarding the electronic music scene, I can’t say that it is good because basically at the moment there aren’t any nightclubs playing this genre except for one maybe …
It’s mostly during the summer where you have some festivals taking place that you will find some options for electronic music. Sadly there isn’t a single venue that I can highlight or recommend.
WWD: What influence does the coastal location and vibe of the city have on the music you make and play?
Again it’s sad to say but due to the lack of electronic music culture there is nothing here that I can hold on to in order to seek inspiration. Regarding the electronic music genre in general you can only find it at festivals and a few events.
WWD: Tell us about your MAMöromusic label – what is the sound, what are you looking for when you sign new music?
Actually I created the label as soon as I started producing, planning on releasing just my own music, but then I realized that maybe it was not ideal for that moment as a newbie in music production and releases and I started releasing on other labels.
You can not be a one-man show, it will come to a point where you will just have to let a few things go and surround yourself with people that will help you to capitalize your career in a faster and effective way.
WWD: You have done a remix of Kaii (PT) – ‘Attraction’ – how did you approach it? What did you want to say?
Kaii is a good friend of mine and we have been in the studio together a couple of times…after he released the track we started talking about doing something together and that’s when I asked him if he would like me to remix it.
So the idea of the remix was to give it a completely different vibe and explore more the vocal side of the track creating a call /response arrangement between the vocals and the groove. We are really happy with the result.
WWD: What is your signature sound? What one bit of your music is the most important – like the bass or melodies or kicks?
My main production style mixes Afro elements with tech driven bass and synths. I also like to use stabs to create a dramatic layer and my build ups are normally built with lots of tension. I also like to produce in a very dynamic structure so normally I have something going in or out every 8 or 16th bars.
To me the most important part of my track is the break, that’s where I mostly create moments and connections with the audience. My breaks are normally very dramatic with a more melodic touch slowly adding tension until the drop.
WWD: You have been DJing for 10 years or more – what is your style and what is your signature way to mix?
To me djing its almost like making a remix.. it all starts with one song and then I begin blending them very smoothly with soft transitions taking elements out and introducing new elements in like if it was an extent of what it was previously playing. I always play with 4 decks because I use a lot of acapellas, stem sounds and cuts from other tracks, so sometimes I find myself with the 4 decks playing at the same time.
WWD: What does afro house and tech mean to you? Why do you love it? What defines it?
Afro House and Afro Tech to me are a superior form of House Music expression. The thing that I absolutely love about Afro House or Afro Tech is its groove dynamic and versatility. I think in no other electronic genre you can hear like 100 tracks and each and every one of them will have an unique groove.
WWD: What are you working on right now?
At the moment, I am working on expanding my new brand Exodus Konzept and also with some collaborations that will be released in 2025.
WWD: What hopes, goals and dreams do you have for 2025?
I have this new brand that I am developing. ‘EXODUS KONZEPT.’ The premiere just took place November 2nd in Lisbon. I am working on some very promising collabs and I am also closing a small tour to South America, which will be my first. The plan for 2025 is to have constant releases and constant gigs so I can continue to express myself through my music and musical performances.
WWD: How exciting! Thanks for the chat 🙂
