We caught up with Organic House veteran, Nick Newman, to discuss his upcoming album, ‘Childhood,’ set for release on Hoomidaas. Enjoy!
WWD: Hey Nick, we’re excited to chat with you about your upcoming album ‘Childhood’ on Hoomidaas. Where are you in the world right now? What have you been up to recently?
I live in Los Angeles, California! My life is pretty busy at the moment. I have a full time career in college athletics as a Track & Field coach. That part of my life requires a lot of travel and day to day commitments. Away from coaching, I am either writing, making music, spending time with my daughters, or sitting in traffic haha.
WWD: This album offers a refreshing electronic blend. Going into the studio, what were you hoping to achieve with the productions? Is there a meaning or vision behind the title ‘Childhood?’
The process of creating themed albums is very enjoyable for me. Childhood is, as the title suggests, an account of my childhood memories and dreams. Each song represents a mood, or feeling that resonates deeply with me. My childhood could be described as peaceful, hopeful, introspective, and meaningful and therefore, I wanted to create the most beautiful, and thought provoking collection of music possible.
WWD: Going back in the past, what would you say are some key moments that were pivotal in your career?
I have to mention Serbian producer Staniša Krstic (Stanisha) first. From advice on studio and software set-up, to sound design and mixing, he means a lot to me. He is certainly one of the most talented music producers out there.
Late producer/DJ Franzis-D was one of the first label owners to recognize my music. He released a lot of my early work as well as collaborated with me on several projects.
The first major support I received from a world renowned artist was definitely a key moment in my career. John Fleming and his label JOOF Recordings released my debut artist album ‘Colors’ in 2015. I believe this was a springboard for me and the rest of my career.
More recently, releasing a variety of songs on Guy J’s imprint Armadillo Records was very meaningful for me. Anytime a major artist support you in that way it is a special feeling.
WWD: Of all the music you’ve made over the years could you select 5 key tracks that give a snapshot of what Nick Newman is all about, for the uninitiated?
I would say the songs that reflect what I am truly about musically would be: ‘Fragments of the Past,’ ‘Childhood,’ ‘Beauty Lies in the Deep,’ ‘Wonder of You,’ and ‘Far Away (Nick Newman Remix)’
WWD: With a career spanning over 12 years, how would you describe the evolution of your music/sound from when you started to now?
My early sound (previous alias – SeamLess Beat) was far more experimental, abstract, and a little more on the darker side. It was less melody, and more soundscape creation, movie score-like I guess you could say. I still love that style of music and recently released an EP called “Secret Society” that was along those lines.
My style has always been described as “deep’ and I doubt that will ever change. And, I have always created music across many genres (from 100 bpm ambient to 124 bpm progressive house), I would say my signature sound could be described as emotional, melancholy, melodic, and introspective.
WWD: What do you seek for listeners to feel when they listen to your music?
A deep connection to the music, their past, present, and future – A place of peace and thoughtfulness – A moment when they close their eyes and dream.
WWD: Thank you for taking time to connect with us today. As a closing question, what advice would you give to any young aspiring producers/DJs?
It’s been a pleasure, thank you. The advice I would give is to create music that resonates deepest with you. Establish your own style, sound, and signature. Connect with likeminded producers. Ask for advice. Support others.
WWD: Wise words! Thanks for the chat, Nick 🙂
