Berlin’s Elias Doré arrives on When We Dip XYZ with a summer classic. An artist of many flavors, Doré has shifted through all facets of music over the years, performing in various bands & playing all genres of music. From Afro-Funk in Dakar, Gipsy in London, Reggae, Soul in Berlin – Elias merges worlds through his modern electronic productions.
Doré connects with the sensational vocalist Stella Moya on Heridas, as she brings a latin touch and delicately defiant performance to the single. Elias’ production offers crisp percussions, smooth synthetics, and a floaty groove that balances & propels the vocal seamlessly. A truly beautiful blend; a track that is sure to take summer dancefloors by storm.
To celebrate the release of ‘Heridas’ we sat down with the Berlin producer to discuss summer plans, inspirations, and collaborations.
WWD: Elias, many congratulations on the release and thanks for joining us today. Where in the world are you currently hanging?
In my home studio, in Berlin.
WWD: For those who may be familiar yet, how would you describe your unique sound?
Always hard to say, but I tend to say mainly – not boring. I love to interweave different genres and oscillate between sonic islands of varying intensity and moods. Playing just one or two genres for a full set leaves me a bit unsatisfied, so I enjoy it a lot to find the perfect segways from one to another. It also makes me very happy if I can touch my listeners and audience in some way with what I do, with emotional soundscapes, melodies and at times vocals playing a central role.
WWD: Tell us about your inspiration for this project. Was there a certain sound, sight, or moment that drove this track?
The track actually started from the bassline which came out of a basement studio jam session, just to lie around for months.. And then come back to life in a vivid late night production session in my home studio. I wanted it from the beginning to be a deep track that bridges feelings of upliftment and melancholy.. Potentially with some vocals in it, which came in the perfect fit with Stella’s performance.
WWD: How did you connect with Stella Moya? You seem like the perfect pairing 🙂
A concert of Stella popped up on my instagram and I was absolutely stunned by her beautiful voice, so that I asked her if she’d want to jam and maybe collaborate on a track or two. We hung out a few times and then actually finished Heridas in just a handful of sessions.
WWD: What have you been listening & playing out lately? Do you have a ‘song of the summer’?
Definitely hard to narrow it down to one single track, but I really enjoyed Doyeq’s “White” EP on KIOSK ID and just love to play “Verano” by Tayllor and and Marasi on a sunny afternoon.
WWD: How have the summer shows been? What have been the stand-out moments for you?
Really enjoyed the summer shows so far, with another recent Sisyphos beach session maybe having been my favourite.. The energy and vibe always brings out the best in me and I feel so at home there, it’s crazy. I played my first ever Berlin show in 2015 on Sisyphos beach so it definitely holds a special place in my heart.
WWD: Tell us about Berlin, and the role it has played in your journey thus far.
Phew, that’s a biggie 🙂 I’ve been born and raised in Berlin and it certainly played a huge part in shaping my approach to art, music and life in general. Im incredibly grateful for so many nights spent on its beautiful dancefloors and all these alternative venues which really shaped my style and grew my love for electronic music. But if I had to nail it down to one specific aspect besides these more general things, I’d say its Berlins lust for excess and really going crazy at a rave.. This is something that I cherish a lot and strive to create for the crowd during my sets.
WWD : Tell us about your label project – Rebellion der Träumer. There seems to be a distinct family vibe behind the collective.
Yes, it definitely is quite a fusion between collective, friend group, label, event organizers etc.
Founded in 2013 as a pure party series, it has since evolved a lot, but many of the people involved back then are still around, with amazing new people having joined the crew over the years. Everyone has their things they work mostly on, some doing booking and events, some the podcasts and me mostly the label.
I often try to support lesser known and up and coming producers who embody the sound played at our events or ideally even push it to new realms. We also proactively try to increase the amount of female producers on the label, as I believe we need to strive for 50-50 balances in releases as well, and not only in bookings.
WWD: What is going on in the studio these days? Any upcoming projects or shows we should know about?
Looking forward massively to returning to Bucht der Träumer festival this year which is organized by some of our crew alongside so many other amazing individuals and crews. I’ve been part of it since the first edition and had some of my most memorable DJ-moments there.
Also really excited for a US tour in September ‘23 that’s taking more and more shape, likely coming to LA, Miami, NYC and Washington.
WWD: Elias, thanks so much for chatting with us and congrats again on the project. Hoping to see you again soon!
Thank you for your time and all the best!
