Erdi Irmak is simply one of the most eclectic producers in the modern deep & melodic scene. The XYZ faithful will have grown fond of Erdi’s work on the imprint thus far, appearing on each of our Oppo projects and presenting a delightful EP earlier this year called Driftwood. As another soaring summer comes to a close, we breathe new life into the Driftwood project with a set of riveting remixes.
Leading the line is Brazilian multi-instrumentalist & producer Maty Owl, who has caught the attention of global dancers through sensational projects with Saisons & Timeless Moments. He takes the reins on I Can Find, crafting a deep groove through swirling synthetics and a revolving bassline. He twists Amega’s vocal chops seamlessly, utilizing them as harmonious elements while the instrumental arrangement takes aim straight at the dancefloor.
Niki Sadeki makes her long-awaited debut on XYZ with her rendition of Rainflow. The Canadian producer & DJ has built deep roots in the scene as a radio host and event organizer, and it’s a pleasure to have our compatriot on the imprint for the first time. She brings an after hours flavor to her remix, as a signature hook ebbs too & fro while crisp drums blissfully balance the space.
Closing the project is Montreal’s Laure, who remixes I Can Find. She allows Amega’s vocal performance to shine over an easy-flowing groove. They bring incredible instrumentalism and a chilled-out ambiance that feels perfectly at home with Erdi’s original work.
To celebrate the release of the Driftwood (The Remixes) we connected with the Canadian producer to talk radio shows and her recent projects.
WWD: Niki, thanks for joining us and congrats on the release. Where are you joining us from today?
Hey! Thanks for having me. Joining you from my studio in Brooklyn.
WWD: How was your summer? Any shows or moments that were particularly memorable?
My summer was great. June and July were crazy busy with shows and travels. I consciously took August off to go back to Vancouver and spend much needed time with family and friends. It’s important to take time off when you think it’s needed, even if it means you’d be missing out on such events like Burning Man, for example.
As for memorable shows, I had a lot of fun at the La Nature Festival in Vielsalm, Belgium. The crowd’s energy was insane. I got cradled (quite literally!) by the crowd throughout my set. In case you want to get a glimpse, here is the IG reel
WWD: Looks like you have been traveling a lot! Is there anywhere you haven’t played yet and are hoping to?
I’ve been fortunate really to have been able to travel and play in many countries so far. I definitely love to play in South America. Playing in countries like Argentina, Brazil and Colombia is a dream.
WWD: Where did you find your inspiration and creativity for this remix? Was there a particular moment, sound, or site that sparked the inspiration?
I’ve been a fan of Erdi Irmak’s sound for quite a few years. In April 2019 he did a mix for my channel Deep House Vancouver, and I fell in love with his storytelling, and got familiarized with his dreamy and skillful way of storytelling. Rainflow is no different; the driven arrangement, with ominous lowend and the soft vocals. I remember when I started working on the remix, the main chord progression was what I got fixated on, and how to re-imagine the main melody, adding the crisp drums to make it even more groovy and dancy. I also had quite a lot of fun playing around with the vocals as well. Overall, a very fun project to work on indeed.
WWD: What is next for Niki? Any upcoming shows or projects that we should know about?
This weekend I’m heading to Toronto for a show. And then next week I’m excited to be heading to ADE. I’m playing at the Laut & Luise & Feines Tier x Kamai x The Other Side ADE showcase alongside many other talented artists.
