Nick Scofield continues to craft a sound of his own. Centered around a backbone of sturdy grooves, he explores realms of melodies both retro and futuristic. With a pair of appearances on our Tales of Romance series, as well as the timeless Highway 1 EP gracing TOR last year, Scofield has built a hearty foundation in the early stages of his journey. As we venture into the new year, we are thrilled to have Scofield back on board for his second full project on the imprint – the Foggy Night EP.
The project’s namesake opens the show in scintillating fashion. Drenched in percussive persistence, rhythmic rotations instantly frame the groove on Foggy Night. Eastern strings provide a lush melody, while ominous synthetics elevate energy throughout this heady cut from Scofield.
Zaghroutah keeps the organic rhythms flowing, while a classic house groove nudges us towards the light. Afro-tinged influences come to the fore from the early stages, while an electro-synth hook surprises the senses. A delightful flute performance is the cherry on top of this one, which cohesively checks all the boxes; a tune for the true groovers.
Closing out this sumptuous trio is Opulence. Low-slung drums get the vibe rolling, as Nick harnesses deviant deep tones through punchy synth stabs and a tripped-out vocal chop. Look no further, this EP succinctly summarizes the Scofield sound.
To celebrate the release of the Foggy Night EP, we caught up with Nick Scofield to find out how the project came together.
Nick, thanks for chatting with us today. We are so happy to have you back on TOR!
Hi guys, really nice to chat with you and be back to TOR family!
Congrats on the release! Tell us about your inspiration behind the Foggy Night EP.
Oh, Foggy Night was born after a gig. I was a little bit drunk and tired in the car and I was listening to the mix of Zaghroutah and I started to think about situations like driving in the night, with police on the back following me, like in a movie! Yes, I know, Gin Tonic helped me…
Talking about music, I started to study other music worlds, because I love to mix sounds from house, deep house, and typical sounds from other worlds really far from my culture.
What was your favorite track on this EP to create? The team has been jamming to Zaghroutah!
I think Opulence. Originally I put in a vocal in a drop taken from a Bob Marley’s interview, where he was talking about richness in life and I built the songs around his voice. But it was difficult to have copyrights on his voice and I decided to cut the vocal off and to work only with instrumentals, but with his voice in my head. I love Opulence because it is slow, but if you hear it, you wanna move your body!
What’s Italy like at the moment – have you found your way back to dancefloor lately?
In Italy the situation right now is shit. Unfortunately the government thinks that the problem is the dancefloor and all that’s around night culture. I am waiting to restart, but in the meantime I’m studying and listening to a lot of music, taking new inspirations and so on.
What have you been listening to lately? Any songs, artists, or albums that have been on repeat?
I’m listening to many genres. I love to listen to jazz, soul, R&B, downtempo and melodic music. In the last week I have been repeating these songs in loop:
- Oliver Koletzki – La Veleta (Kunterweiss Remix)
- Emotional Tourist – Alchimie De L’Univers (feat. Ondin) [When We Dip XYZ] (Love this one!)
- Neil Flynn – Flowers Don’t Bend In The Rain [Lossless]
- The remix of my fellow citizens Agents of Time of Take My Breath by The Weekend, played a lot in Tulum over the last few days.
What has been your proudest release of your career thus far?
Definitely the song La Vida, licensed for Buddha Bar’s last summer compilation. The song contains a message; an important message about life and the time we spend to make money to buy useless stuff. And also because Buddha Bar has always been a world icon for me, so it was great when I knew I would’ve finally made it into it and be part of this amazing reality.
Whats on the radar for you in 2022? Any exciting upcoming projects we should know about?
YES! I am working on two really exciting projects with two different musicians; one with a jazz guitar player, Paolo Magno, with whom we produced ten songs, a mixture of jazz, house and lo-fi. The other is with a composer, singer and guitar player named Paul Nose. We are working on deep house music with influences by The Doors, Beatles, Pink Floyd, that’s his background, the music he is more into. We are working on a live exhibition and I’m super excited about these new trips.
Nick, many thanks for joining us! Congratulations again on the release, and we hope to see you soon.
I want to say thank you and a big hug to all the WWD and TOR family. I’m really grateful and honored to be a part of this family. Thank you for believing in my musical visions and congratulations for your job and attention to new artists and new music experiments.
Ciao ragazzi!
