Satoshi Fumi returns to TOR after making his debut on our latest Tales of Romance release. The Bedrock and Sudbeat regular is rooted in Detroit and Chicago influences, yet pulls from various modern melodic methods in a pristine blend of house and techno. The Japanese maestro has crafted a boastful reputation throughout an illustrious career, as is evident by his continued support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, John Digweed, and Hernan Cattaneo. We’re honored to host the next chapter of Satoshi’s journey in the form of Colour Drops.
The project’s namesake leads the line with crisp drums enticing an easy-flowing groove. Lucious pads ebb & flow, while strings rest under an electro-tinged hook. Colour Drops effortlessly thins out, offering space for a momentary respite, beforing kicking right back into gear with hearty movement.
A Lull In The Wind strips things back, harvesting ominous tones at the centerpoint of synthetic and organic. Satoshi’s synths swirl freely, capturing timeless electronic character, while a bespoke bassline offers just a touch of grit.
Palm opens with a punchy percussive rhythm, quickly giving way to elongated melodic swoops and classic piano chords. It’s the perfect closer to a project that floats along in seamless style, showcasing the Satoshi Fumi sound we all needed to hear this spring.
To celebrate the release, we caught up with Satoshi for a quick chat on how everything came together.
WWD – Satoshi, many thanks for joining us! How are you doing these days?
Satoshi – I’m dreaming for brighter days to return soon!
WWD – We just released an amazing remix on the label from your compatriot Boys Be Kko – Who are some of the other Japanese house and techno artists we should be keeping an eye on at the moment?
Satoshi – Takuya Yamashita, Tominori Hosoya, Masanori Nozawa, M-scape
WWD – Which artists have been influential in your own development as a producer? We hear distinct respect to Detroit in your sound…
Satoshi – Yes, I love Detroit House and Techno. I feel Machine Soul from them. Also I have influences from Francois Kevokian, Laurent Garnier, Mad Mike, Josh Wink, LTJ Bukem, Carl Craig, Frankei Knuckles, Brian Eno, Steve Reich and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
WWD – We’re absolutely loving the Colour Drops EP – all three tracks hit the spot. Tell us a bit about how these tunes came together?
Satoshi – I challenged myself to try a brand new sound. I focused on a smooth, warm and atmospheric sound.
WWD – You’ve been collaborating with one of our good friends Ian O’Donovan recently. How did you guys first come together in the studio?
Satoshi – I found that Ian has a very similar musical sense to me. When I was producing the track Rising, I thought he would fit perfectly for a collaboration.
WWD – What projects do you have on the radar in the next couple of months?
Satoshi – a big secret 🙂
WWD – Thanks for everything, Satoshi! It’s been a pleasure. We hope to see you on the road sometime soon 🙂
Satoshi – Hopefully at the end of this strange situation, we will play together somewhere !
