Greg Ochman is a name at the tip of everyone’s tongue at the moment. The Polish producer has proven his immense quality through recent gems on Sebastian Leger’s Lost Miracle, as well as an eclectic project with Radiant.
For his TOR debut, he offers Inner Awake. Harnessing the staples of his sound – electronica dripping in melodic tones – he seamlessly blends synthetic and organic influences. Swirling electronics ebb and flow alongside percussive rhythms throughout a blissful arrangement.
The release comes as part of TOR’s signature release series : the third edition of the Tales of Romance VA. As our team continues to set the foundations of TOR’s sound and creative direction, this series showcases the pillars of the imprint in the years to come, and provides an explorative platform for our family of producers.
To celebrate Ochman’s debut on TOR, and his introduction to the When We Dip family, we caught up with him to chat about the impressive start to 2021 he is enjoying, and what we can look forward to in the coming months.
WWD: Grzegorz, we’re very happy to have you involved on the latest Tales of Romance project! Welcome aboard 🙂
Hi! My pleasure. Thank you for having me here.
WWD: Whats it like to be involved in a ‘VA’ release, with artists of different shapes and sizes coming together in such a groove project? What other artists on the release do you connect with?
It’s really nice, I’m happy with it. Diversity has a huge power of which everyone can get inspiration. Tracks on this release are very different, but all projects are very consistent.
I think music is the key. Big names do not always mean quality and often less known artists produce brilliant pieces of art.
Anyway, I recommend enrolling with “Tales Of Romance”!
WWD: Which track from the release, other than your own, stands out the most to you?
I like Rashid Ajami’s “Music Is My Medicine”. I definitely agree with the title.
WWD: You’ve had some huge releases of late, with labels from Sebatian Leger and Sabb. Aside from the stellar music, how have you been able to make such a strong impact upon entering the deep & melodic scene? I’m sure many up & coming producers would love some advice on connecting with labels in their early days.
I produced a tech/ deep house with a melodic vibe , which was quite eclectic and there were not too many labels and people who felt it. My musical patterns have evolved into the organic house space, which is the closest to me. In organic house, I can have an infinite palette of melodies and instruments I can use. Music is a vibrancy, so people both hear and feel the music. So my advice would be to have a passion for music, do it from inside of you and look for your own unique style.
WWD: Inner Awake is a bit deeper and percussive then some of your other recent work; how do you maintain diverse influences and techniques in the studio?
Everything depends on my mood but techniques still stay the same. I try to join different styles and those surprising connections, not obvious music solutions, summarize my style. I just produce what I feel.
WWD: What’s been the personal favorite track of yours that has been released thus far?
It is definitely “Delylah” because it’s different, melodically diverse and very emotional.
WWD: Tell us about the Blonde Nuit project, and how it differs from the new self-titled releases as Greg Ochman?
Thank you for asking about that. Blonde Nuit is a music project I’m creating with my friend vocalist & artist Ludo Henri Fernand from Paris.. It’s a completely different style… I think it’s an interesting piece of music.
2 years ago we released the first album which is a cinematic, electronic genre. The 2nd album is ready and we went a step forward which is electronica with some live acoustic, electric guitars.. Now we started the next one and it will be very different.
WWD: What role has Poland played in your journey thus far? Tell us about the local electronic roots that are present there.
I was born and grew up in Poland and I’m very proud of it, it’s an absolutely fantastic country. But musically I was always looking for inspiration from all over the world.
WWD: When did you relocate to Manchester? A hotbed of house and techno since the beginning!
Ohh yeah, many years ago. I came just for a short time and stayed a little longer ;).
WWD: How have you stayed creative and energetic in the last year or so, given the difficult state of things across the world?
Last year I could take more time to improve my sound. Always trying to focus on my inner world, not on the external one. Someone may say it’s not easy but I’m telling you it’s that easy 🙂
WWD: How do you think the underground dance & electronic scene will change in the long term due to the pandemic?
It is really sad and frustrating that the music and event industry is the most affected due to the pandemic.. It’s challenging times but I look into the future with good energy so let’s have hope that everything comes back to normal.
WWD: Who are some of the artists and labels that you’ve been jamming to of late?
Some of my favourite artists at the moment are: Luka Sambe, Sebastien Leger, Fulltone and favourite labels: Lost Miracle, Clubsonica, Radiant., Univack… to name just a few…
WWD: What’s a major artistic goal you have for yourself in the next year? What about in the next 10 years?
Making music, playing gigs and being a happy , fulfilled person.
I also believe that some great things are about to happen to me ;)….
WWD: What’s next on the calendar for you? What can we look forward to from your corner this summer?
My release schedule is full this year so far, also there are few releases in 2022…. Back to this year there will be some nice Ep’s coming on Sirin Music, Univack, Go Deeva Recordings but also single tracks on VA and remixes … so definitely a lot of music coming out and also looking forward to playing some gigs this summer…
WWD: Greg, many thanks for joining us! Congratulations again on the stellar release – cheers to many more!
Thank you and take care.
