Stockholm’s melodic mastery is on full display with the latest offering from XYZ, as Hosini takes over remix duty on Frost. First released as part of last year’s Oppo I, a project curated by Hosini himself, it’s only fitting that he’s the one to revamp the blissful production from Jones Meadow.

Having been musical comrades for years, connecting on a stunning Anjunadeep release, the established understanding of sound between the two Swedes shines through on the Frost remix. Hosini eases us into the groove, capturing the original’s heady drumline and comforting pads. He brings the arrangement into refreshed territory, utilizing quintessential melodic mastery and soaring strings.

Hosini and Jones Meadow sound like the light at the end of the tunnel.

To celebrate the release of Hosini’s remix for Jones Meadow, we caught up with Jonas (ie Jones Meadow) for a chat on how everything came together in such stunning fashion.

WWD – Jonas, thanks for joining us today. Hope you’ve been well my friend!

Jones Meadow – Thanks for having me. 

WWD – We’re loving the Frost remix, and have hammered the original over the last couple months since its release in November. What stands out about Frost compared to your other projects of late?

Jones Meadow – I’d say that Frost is a bit more electronic and cinematic than most of my recent projects that are more live instrument oriented. For this one I’ve used a lot of melodic synths in rhythmic patterns to create a warm evolving kind of groove on the inside, where the melancholic ambient padding keeps it frosty on the outside.

WWD – Hosini, whom appeared with you on Oppo and oversaw the curation of the release, takes the reign on remixing Frost. How did you guys first connect?

Jones Meadow – We met in school back in 2012, where we teamed up doing statistics. Turned out we both had a passion for music and after our course was done we stayed in touch over the years and continuously sent each other stuff for feedback. Eventually we came to realise we shared a lot in musical taste and had much to complement each other with production wise, so we started creating together.

WWD – Whats it like to have such a musical understanding with a collaborator, and how does your process change with a fellow artist in the studio? It’s been amazing to watch your journey together on Anjunadeep & XYZ over the last year.

Jones Meadow – For me the process of working closely along a collaborator is always defined by how well you know each other. Sitting in a room producing with a stranger can be hard, because of the pressure of delivering right away and also feeling the need to be more enthusiastic about the stuff that you otherwise can be straightforward with. Since me and Hosini became friends years before we started working together, getting into the studio and producing from scratch felt easy and without any writer’s block. The musical result of two minds collaborating successfully is in my opinion often a more interesting production, compared to when you’re working solo.

WWD – Powel, Esteble, and Erdi Irmak appeared alongside you, with amazingly chilled out tunes on Oppo. What was unique about the Oppo project, and the ability to connect with a stunning set of producers in this unique manner of a ‘curated’ release?

Jones Meadow – I’ve never done anything like it before and thought the idea of having one artist putting together a record with four other creators was commercially appealing and an interesting concept. 

WWD – What exciting projects do you have in the works, as we set signs on a return to normal in the coming months?

Jones Meadow – I keep doing what I’m doing best I think. Go to work every day and create music. Never know what direction I’ll be heading next, but I know I’ve found new love for electric bass again. Been playing since I was a kid, but having gone pretty electronic these last years means there’s been many tracks where It’s been left out standing in the corner.  So I imagine the music will take a groovy direction in the future.

WWD – What artists and labels have you had on the headphones over the last little while?

Jones Meadow – I listen to a lot of old timers such as Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Nina Simone. But there’s also stuff like Khruangbin, HNNY, Bonobo and Ölafur Arnalds to name a few that make their way in there.

WWD – How has Stockholm, and Sweden in general, inspired or impacted your musical creations thus far? 

Jones Meadow – Well, I guess the seasons do have a special impact. The long and dark cold where we barely get to see the sun for six months, make you stay in a lot and focus on the work. When the sun finally does come back heading for the period of midnight sun you refuel your energy and come alive. My home town Stockholm is apparently the fastest growing city in Europe, so there’s always been a lot happening. Except for this past year of course, where most things seemingly came to a halt.

WWD – Many of us were captivated by Sweden’s approach to the pandemic. What was it like to be in a place which seemed to do things quite differently over the last year?

Jones Meadow – For good and bad I believe a lot of people have been spared from going insane and bankrupted by avoiding the consequences of total lockdown. That said, the price of individual judgement and responsibility given to the people is a higher death toll compared to our nordic nabours.

WWD – How do you foresee the music industry, and specifically the electronic community, shifting gears due to the pandemic?

Jones Meadow – I don’t believe people will keep from going to concerts and live shows when all this is over. On the contrary I think people will feel the urge to catch up on what they’ve all been missing out on. 

WWD – What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Jones Meadow – I’m mostly looking forward to seeing my folks being able to hug my kid again and maybe being able to dance at a party without having to think about social distancing.
