Gorje Hewek is a man that needs little introduction. The All Day I Dream and Shanti Moscow Radio maestro has garnered a top notch reputation for mesmerising dance-floors around the world. This week, the Russian artist adds his top 10 tracks from his playa experiences to our Sound of Burning Man playlist and shares his my favourite moment from the dust.
“My main impression of Burning Man was the very first hours I got there. Primarily because I didn’t really know anything about this place. More precisely, nothing at all. I have a few friends who talked a little about where it all happens and I saw some classic photos from there. All this was not enough to inspire me to organize a trip there, given that for me it is not like driving to a neighboring state.
But in that year, everything somehow turned out well by itself. I bought a ticket without any hassle and the rest organizational issues of the trip were also successful.
Since I decided “if we really go, then for the whole week”, my friends and I, of course, got into a long queue for entry, which is why I just slept through the entire race and woke up when we were already looking for a place of our camp. It was earlier in the morning, at about 5 AM. And as soon as we parked our RV, it all started.
Our camp was near Playa, so I decided to just take a walk and see what was happening there. These impressions and the atmosphere from what I saw then, probably imprinted in my memory for life. It was both pleasant surprise and shock at the same time.
Then out of nowhere appeared my friend from NYC, who was riding on an carpet-plane (on top of this is a large carpet, which had wheels on the bottom, and 10 people could fit on it), when he saw me, he just threw me on the carpet, said that they were going to friends camp and turned up the music. Now I understand that this is a typical situation in Burning Man, but at that moment when I just drove here 10 minutes ago, and 30 minutes ago I woke up peaceful and did not understand at all what was happening here and how my NYC friend has found me (who did not know that I would go to BM).
A little later, a storm came. One of those that can turn over a poorly fixed yurt. Although, probably like many who come there for the first time, a few minutes before that I brushed specks of dust from my pants. I sat in all this environment and was slowly imbued with all the unique atmosphere and energy that can develop only in this desert and that very moment a week long.”
